It’s a certain kind of risk-taker who would put a successful hip-hop career in Asia on hold for relative obscurity in the American market. Especially when that career abroad includes sold out tours, lucrative endorsement deals, and consecutive #1 albums.

At a Saturday night performance in Fremont, 24 year-old Korean singing phenom Dong-Wook Choi showed he’s ready to bet it all on his lucky alias, “Se7en.”

He performed for the first time in Seattle at the three-year anniversary of Whisper Entertainment, starting his bid to become the first Asian music star to crossover to the top of the U.S. charts.

Se7en (pronounced like the number) is no stranger to the spotlight. He’s already conquered Korea with four bestselling albums and nine Korean Music Awards. In Japan, he’s sold out arenas with two hit CD’s and snagged the MTV Asia “Most Popular Korean Singer” nod.

For his first American album, Se7en enlisted the talents of Three-Six Mafia and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, along with Lil’ Kim, who is featured on his first single, “Girls.” The single and video are set to be released in early 2009.

Se7en appeared modest at a press event before Saturday’s show, fielding questions in Korean and English. How’s life in America? “I love it.” U.S. star he’d most like to collaborate with? “Beyonce.”

Later, on stage, his charisma and moves brought comparisons to homegrown pop icons like Justin Timberlake and Usher. He performed three tracks off his upcoming English-language album, along with his popular Korean hit “LaLaLa,” an audience favorite.

Despite snow on the ground, on Sunday more than a hundred people stood outside his signing at a Verizon Wireless store in Federal Way. This after thousands swarmed Se7en events in San Francisco and Orange County earlier this year. Promising signals for a young artist gambling on success in America.
